Season 2018

The SCAPE Public Art Season 2018 marked 20 extraordinary, exciting, mind-expanding years, since SCAPE Public Art began to revolutionise the open spaces of Ōtautahi Christchurch – and public arts practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

SCAPE is known for its work bringing art outside the gallery walls and into the city, making contemporary art, both national and international, truly accessible and public in a fresh and exciting way.

The Season 2018 was our time to celebrate; the 216 temporary artworks that popped up during our Seasons; the 14 legacy (permanent) artworks contributed to Christchurch; and the industry and business partnerships that have made these accomplishments possible.

Managing Curator Heather Galbraith developed a programme that drew together different strands from SCAPE’s history, integrating past works, and looked toward the future with new and existing works contemplating our relationships to land, sea, language, cultural and political agency and expression, how histories are told and retold, the built environment, and even the cosmos – Our Braided Future being the theme for the Season.

The SCAPE Public Art Season 2018 profiles key elements related to public art:

  • SCAPE Public Art Walkway – Linked the Season’s artworks together
  • Our Braided Future – Heather Galbraith’s curated exhibition of public artwork
  • Re:ACTIVATE Aspiring Artists Junior and Senior Exhibition of four aspiring young artists’ public artworks
  • SCAPE Education – Classroom programme and art making activities
  • SCAPE Public Programme– Artist talks, screenings and events, many free for the public
  • Pop up Gallery at Pūmanawa Gallery – Exhibited sculptures, paintings, photographs, ceramics and limited editions by SCAPE artists for sale.
  • SCAPE Events– Including an opening weekend of youth, family and children-focused free events

Season 2018 volunteers

SCAPE Public Art Season 2018 will be opening this year in Christchurch between 6 October and 8 November 2018 which mixes new artworks with existing legacy pieces, an education programme, and a public programme of events.

We now have fantastic volunteer opportunities for our upcoming Event Season 2018 to support our programmes. Our event season opens on 6 October, but we have a whole year of planning if you’d like to get involved.

What we need from you is great customer service experience, communication and administration skills, the ability to work well as part of a team, be polite and have a sense of humour. Drivers license essential.

If you would like to know more about this opportunity or apply as a volunteer, drop us an email to michelle@scapepublicart.org.nz

What do we do?

SCAPE Public Art installs public art in Christchurch all year round with a focus on the Annual Seasons. SCAPE Public Art is the Christchurch expert in the installation of public art, and the SCAPE Public Art Seasons are New Zealand’s Premier Public Art Events.

SCAPE Public Art moved from its biennial model to an annual, six-week season of Public Art in 2016, launching new works and showcasing the extensive current catalogue of major public artworks.

Over the past 18 years we have become the largest producer of new contemporary artwork in New Zealand. These artworks provide a unique point of difference for the city. Ambitious and high impact, they enhance the urban centre and raise the profile for public art in Christchurch.
