Description
Sleek and polished, with internal curves, Suffragette by artist Gill Gatfield, is a transformative sculpture conveying qualities of beauty, resilience and strength. Inspired by the power and poise of the nineteenth-century activists who won the vote for women and the right to be legally defined as a ‘person’, the sculpture reclaims the term ‘Suffragette’ which was first used by detractors to shame women who spoke up for their rights. The first-person pronoun form articulates a central tenet of twentieth-century activism: the personal is political, an idea that remains at the heart of universal human rights.
