The 15th of 21 street lamps installed as part of Mischa Kuball’s Solidarity Grid. It was installed in September 2015.

The street lamp gifted from Ieper, Belgium is a symbol of the connection between our two cities which have both experienced devastation and proudly rebuilt beyond that.

Ieper was profoundly affected by the First World War and does much to honour the memory of the New Zealand soldiers who fought there. Meanwhile Christchurch continues its rebuild after its own devastation endured during the 2011 earthquakes. Remembering both cities’ rebuild efforts, this street lamp will signify a treasured civic bond into the future.

Ieper, also known as Ypres, was almost destroyed after four years of intense battles centred within its walls during World War I. Today it is a city dedicated to peace. Many of its medieval-style buildings have been replicated and rebuilt since the War to their full glory. There are many museums and historic sites dedicated to respecting the city’s past. It is also known for its fine chocolates, cycling and Cats Festival.
